Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition (Missing Manual)

Review (rating: 5):
After using the Tiger version of Mac OS X (10.4) for a couple of months, I updated to the Leopard version (10.5) and obtained the Leopard edition of David Pogue’s book from O’Reilly. Because of the new features in Leopard, this edition has expanded from 515 pages to 590 pages.
Although I expected to find a short section listing all of the new features introduced by Leopard, its absence is not a serious problem. These lists can be found on the Internet and then printed for reference.
This edition of the book follows the same chapter layout as the Tiger edition and includes all the very helpful features for anyone switching from a Windows-based PC to an iMac or MacBook. In addition to continually taking the PC-user’s viewpoint in every section, there are chapters and sections especially designed to ease the transition. The most helpful for PC users are:
Chapter 1 - How the Mac is different
Chapters 5-7 - Transferring files, emails, contacts, etc. from your PC and also, Mac capabilities for replacing specific Windows programs
Appendix B - Where Did It Go? You’ll find yourself referring to this useful appendix often to quickly find out how to do all the things that were second-nature on the PC, e.g., Ctl-Alt-Delete to `kill’ stuck programs, shutdown, zipping/unzipping files, taskbar & system tray, favorites, and much more.
It you are switching from a PC to a Mac running Leopard, you’ll love this book. But if you already have the Tiger edition and just want the Leopard content, then you will benefit more from purchasing the more comprehensive (almost 900 pages) Mac Leopard OS X: The Missing Manual, 2007, which is also by David Pogue.

I bought and read this book while I was waiting for my new Dell XPS to arrive, and I thank my lucky stars every day since that I did. When my computer was installed, I already knew where everything was so I just fell into it with no problem whatsoever. I’ve told a lot of my friends, if you’re thinking of getting Vista, do two things. Get your computer made with a LOT of ram, no less than three gigs, a good sound card, a good video card, big hard drive, and READ THIS BOOK FIRST before you ever open the computer. It’ll save you a lot of angst over VISTA. I’m sure most of the problems people report having with it are because they went into it without any real preparation beforehand. Vista is different, but it’s not impossible once you’ve gone through this book. It’s very long, but you’re not trying to memorize everything in it, you’re trying to help yourself make your way around a brand new and very beautiful operating system. As long as you have this book in your house, you’ll be fine. HIGHLY recommended.

I took an afternoon and went through this book from cover to cover - admittedly not all topics drew my careful attention. Too many operational details are missing: hit this key, then go to x and enter ….. etc. In sum, although my system is up and running (and was before I bought the book), I am missing instruction on many basic operations.
Try somewhere else.

Last March 2007, I purschased the Vista Visually Series that this writer wrote. And, I was so impressed with the author and the content of this book that when I discovered this newer Vista book by the same author, I bought it as well. The reason that I bought this book that I wanted a quick overview on both Tips and Tricks of Vista. After one year using Vista, I have learned so much more about it. Yet, there is always more to learn and an easier and better way to do things in Vista. This author gives you 10 very easy to read and follow chapters that give wonderful and helpful information yet do not bore or overwhelm the reader. The graphics are excellent! The most helpful chapter I found is chapter 5, which is called “Enhance Internet Security and Privacy”. Although this chapter could have been longer and more detailed, it gives enough information about: Scanning for Spyware, Web Page Media Safely and Privately, Spam info, and super email info and more. Another chapter I was very impressed with the content is chapter 6. In this chapter the author gives you basic Internetting tips and faster movement in pages showing you how to use tabs, a real help when you are browsing more than one web page at a time and wish to go back to each of them. Also in this chapter I found many good suggestions for websites, safe websites, web feeds and more. Superb book, superb author, I highly reccomend this book!

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Windows Vista (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech))
Great book for a hands on person. I understand things better when there are visual examples that I can use. The only problem (so far) is the fine print. I sometimes need a magnifier to read it and wish that part of it was more user friendly. If not for that issue, I would give it a 5 star review. So, if you don,t have a problem working with fine print, I would recommend this book.

Book gives an excellent introduction of WPF. However, I think that the 2D/3D-part of the book is a bit over the top if you are looking for basics.
Money well spent.
